I often avoid doing things because of memories I would rather not revisit. It’s not to say that these memories are negative or they remind me of something I’d rather not think about. Rather, thinking about the past runs the risk of revisiting, if not recreating it, then tracing it over to the point of just mimicking. Revisiting the past use to seem like failure to me. But now there’s something personal and unique about taking the past and fitting it into your current life and use it to your benefit.
Memories are naturally territorial and people often want to keep them for themselves. Some memories don’t belong to just you, though. They’re being thought about and talked about by others with different contexts and outcomes. Maybe you’re more of a supporting character than the protagonist. It’s selfish in a way to think you have ownership of these moments. But the memories don’t have to end on one retelling. And there’s nothing wrong with seeing the potential for something in your past and wanting to revisit it as the hot newness you are.
